History of Vibram, A Climber's Dream

Vibram S.p.A. is an Italian company based in Albizzate that both manufactures and licenses the production of Vibram-branded rubber outsoles for footwear. The company is named after its founder, Vitale Bramani, who started the company in Milan in 1937. As you can see, the company name is the first few letters of the founder’s given name and family name.




Bramani is credited with inventing the first rubber soles for shoes. These soles were first used on mountaineering boots. But for what reason did Bramani invented those gears?? Bramani was a climber. In 1935, he and his mountaineering friends decided to climb the Italian Alps. Unfortunately, six of his friends lost their life, and almost he lost his, due to inadequate footwear. He was determined to make special soles for mountaineering shoes to better protect climbers.



Two years later, he patented his invention and launched the first rubber soles on the market with a tread design called the 'Carrarmato', with the financial backing of Leopoldo Pirelli of Pirelli Tires. The sole was designed to provide excellent traction on the widest range of surfaces, have a high degree of abrasion resistance and was made using the latest vulcanized rubber of the time, which improved the safety of mountaineering.

Vibram has been innovating and developing. The Vibram outsoles plus the yellow octagon logo became the symbol of quality, performance, safety and innovation. Vibram outsoles not only reformed mountaineering but also became a standard. The soles produced by Vibram are called Vibram soles, Vibram rubber, or simply Vibram.
